Promising young actress Cordelia (Antonia Campbell-Hughes) survived the terrorist bomb blast as she rode the Piccadilly Line Tube on 7 July 2005. But she has been a damaged soul ever since, reclusive, introverted and blighted by the psychological impact of the horrors she experienced that day.
However, after 12 years spent isolating herself in a basement flat in central London, shared with her twin sister Caroline (also played by Campbell-Hughes), she’s gradually pulling her life back together. Her return to acting brings a part in a new play and she begins to emerge from the home in which she has imprisoned herself.
As Caroline prepares to go away for the weekend with her new boyfriend, Matt (Joel Fry), Cordelia faces the prospect of two days without her sister’s previously constant presence. Here is a chance for Cordelia to test how far she has overcome the survivor’s guilt and post-traumatic stress.
But from the moment she is alone the weekend unfolds in a series of bewildering events … Cordelia is drawn into the tragedy of her eccentric neighbour Mr Moses (Michael Gambon) and encounters Frank (Johnny Flynn), the enigmatic and charming cellist upstairs whose music beguiles her. Then come the mysterious phone calls and the realisation she is not only being stalked but that her fragile sanity is sliding from view. Suddenly she is vulnerable again and doesn’t know the difference between what is real or imagined, who to trust, or who to run from.
As the film reaches its climax, Cordelia experiences an even more dangerous threat, against which she is more than ever alone.
Shot on widescreen 35mm film and with thematic and stylistic nods towards Roman Polanski’s Repulsion, Cordelia is an atmospheric thriller steeped in visceral undertones of the great paranoia films such as Francis Ford Coppola’s The Conversation, Alan J. Pakula’s Klute and Roman Polanski’s Rosemary’s Baby.
COMMERCIAL RATIONALE AND SALES FORECASTS
Cordelia is a film that punches far above its weight. Already described as showing like a £10 million film, yet produced for only a quarter of that figure, the budget was managed impeccably to be able to shoot on 35mm film anamorphic. The result is a big-budget-movie feel that is so intimate and captivating it engages in the cinema as a stage play would in the theatre.
